Before Susan Kare gave us Chicago, Geneva, and those perfect pixelated icons, she gave us something even more delightfully absurd: a creature that was equal parts bovine, equal parts canine, and 100% Peak Classic Mac. The Dogcow—sorry, a legally distinct imaginary cowdog of unknown origin—lived in the Page Setup dialog, making a sound that can only be described as “moof.”

The whole joke lived inside one dialog box. You opened Page Setup, clicked Options, and there it stood, waiting to demonstrate what Flip Horizontal was about to do to your document. Tick a box and it turned around. Tick another and it went negative. A preview widget doing a preview widget’s job—and somehow the most beloved thing in the entire system.

It was drawn at a size that leaves no room for hedging: a handful of pixels across, one bit deep. Every pixel is either on or off, and each one has to earn its place. Blow it up and you can count the decisions. That constraint is why the thing still reads at any size—including stitched into twill at 1.5 inches wide.

The gold rope along the brim is pure vintage snapback energy paired with matching gold looped embroidery up front (this was super difficult to get right, by the way). On the side panel, embroidered in tone-on-tone green so subtle you might miss it: a legally distinct imaginary cowdog.

The green is Augusta National green, which is a deliberate choice—this is a hat for the back nine as much as the desk. The sweatband uses our ultra-absorbent, highly-padded 100% nylon. It won’t discolor from sweat and stays comfortable through 18 holes or 18 hours of Xcode.
